About Us
Our Mission
Hello, Betsey White here. Welcome to our volunteer
family.
After three bouts with breast cancer over the past 25 years, other life threatening and life-altering challenges, I have
learned and grown into a place of gratefulness.
I have made so many life choices and changes (very
difficult ones) through the last couple of decades. The diagnosis and treatment began in 1982 when I was 32 years old with
lumpectomy, radiation and prophylactic hysterectomy. Ten years later in 1992 (after a messy divorce and a stroke) the
cancer returned in the same area and I chose partial mastectomy. 2002 the same breast, same cancer again. My thought
(perceived as self-destructive by most) had been that I would let the breast cancer have breast tissue and it would rather
be there than in my bones or organs. Now the breast tissue is gone as final treatment.

At first the diagnosis was a private matter between
friends, family, and medical staff. After participation in some support groups, and going to routine medical exams, I encountered
a shift and found that I was labeled a cancer patient first, person last (or not at all). This is the point where my personal
journey became most difficult. I found it incredibly hard to cope with the emotional needs of others. So, I consciously removed
myself from what I perceived as toxic thoughts and surroundings. I just needed time to lick my wounds and come to know the
new person I had become. I was changed (not dead!).
My focus is now on celebrating the person...not as a patient, but
as a worthwhile unique individual undergoing a challenging time.
We have found that most of our hats are purchased as a very personal (and practical) gift for a loved one. I love that!
