Mission Statement
2007 Mission Statement Betseys Bonnets
serves the medically and financially disadvantaged with free Hand-Knit One-Of-A-Kind Hats that are comfortable, unique and
celebrate life. The charity designs the hats to acknowledge, honor and show respect for those facing a particularly challenging
time.
Hats have historically expressed and emphasized individuality and are said to transport the wearer to another
place and time, speaking volumes before its wearer utters a word. Cowboy hats, baseball hats, ski hats, beanies, bonnets and
more; for children and adults are lovingly created by volunteers using only the highest quality yarns. The corporations emphasis
is on hats for persons experiencing hair loss from chemotherapy or other medical conditions.
Knitting is proven to
lower blood pressure and has other benefits similar to those derived from Yoga and meditation. These findings prompted the
design and publication of a knitting pattern that takes into account the specific needs of a person with temporary hair loss.
This pattern is available for patients and loved ones to knit their own practical and beautiful hat. The Betseys Bonnets Chemo
Cap pattern is included in the knitting kits that have sensitive scalp friendly yarns. The pattern is also available free
by request. BBonnets.org has a large variety of styles in hundreds of colors that are offered for sale or donation via the
Internet, telephone or fax.
The charity strives to support its 100% volunteer run and operated corporation with opportunities
to enhance wellness of body and spirit for both those who give, and those who receive. With this in mind, the BBonnets.org
Guest House was introduced in 2006. The guest house offers patients and their families visiting Seattle (an estimated 80%
of those seeking medical care in Seattle), the option to have a "home away from home." When patients are not using the apartment
it is available to the general public for short term stays. All revenue generated is to serve the needs of the corporation
and the community it serves.
In the fight for survival during medical or financial crisis, the strength and uniqueness
of a person is tested and self-identity is often lost. Betseys Bonnets serves as a means for patients, and those who support
them, to give and receive a gift intended to warm body and spirit; and to celebrate life with dignity, self-esteem and individual
expression.
